KARACHI: Women in Sindh have more reason to celebrate as the free pink electric scooter scheme is set to expand to additional cities.
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has approved the wider rollout of the initiative, with Sukkur and Hyderabad expected to be included in the next phase.
The decision was taken during key meetings at Bilawal House in Karachi, where public welfare initiatives and citizen concerns were reviewed.
Provincial Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon briefed Bilawal on the progress of the program in Karachi. Expressing satisfaction, Bilawal instructed officials to gradually extend the scheme to all districts across Sindh.
Sukkur and Hyderabad will be the first cities in this expansion, with distribution events likely to take place soon.
Under the program, free electric scooters are being provided to eligible women who meet specific requirements. Applicants must be permanent residents of Sindh, either studying or employed, and must hold a valid driving license for a motorcycle or car. Beneficiaries will not be allowed to sell or transfer the scooters for a period of seven years.
The selection process will be carried out through a transparent lottery system, followed by a basic road safety test for shortlisted candidates.
The Sindh government is also planning to develop supporting infrastructure to ensure the smooth use of electric scooters across the province.
